Exploring Meditation Techniques

There are many ways meditation has been proven to help the human body and mind. However there is a misconception that there is only one kind of meditation. There are actually many ways to meditate that can help you achieve a higher state of consciousness. Exactly what is meditation, though? Meditation is the practice in which a person induces a mode of consciousness. This is done to become more aware of ourselves and the world that surrounds us. It’s all about touching base within ourselves and training ourselves to allow the feelings of that moment to be felt 100% not to mention the feeling of our body. It’s about not ignoring any part of yourself and what’s going on around you but actually feeling it all.

Meditation doesn’t have to be with your eyes closed and silent but it can be done in many different ways. Here are just a few meditation techniques you might have not considered before:

Walking Meditation: That’s right; mediation can be as simple as taking a walk outside. While practicing kinhin (what walking mediation is called in the zen tradition) practitioners move slowly and are encouraged to listen to their bodies as they move. Posture is integral to this form of mediation as well as breathing slowly and paying attention to the way the body moves and how everything around you moves as you do. Seeing as the walking must be continuous this practice is best done outside where you can move for a while without being interrupted. However if you want to go to the gym, put some relaxing music on and use the equipment provided then that’s just as good.

Dance Meditation: Many people think that meditation has to be a passive and quiet adventure. That’s not true as proven by dance meditation. Most people have danced once or twice to relieve stress however, kundalini meditation takes that release one step beyond and asks that you learn to let go of your ego and truly let the music guide your body.  Some teachers encourage yelling and jumping!

Tantric massages: Sensual energy can be very relaxing and that’s exactly what tantric massages are. During a massage you’re taught to experience your body completely, letting yourself go in the process. Allowing someone else to be there to guide you and to show you the ins and outs of your sensual being is an incredible way to touch base with yourself. Our tantric massages take place in luxurious, relaxing rooms with soothing music. Just like with other mediation forms expressing yourself and not being silent is very much encouraged.
